Self-Defense; More than Meets the Eye

March 2, 2016

This March we are focusing on encouraging self-defense. Many of you might believe that self-defense is just for getting jumped in a dark alley, but it’s more than that. Self-defense is protecting your body from injury at all times. It’s being aware of your surroundings and protecting yourself from possible injury. Once you’ve have a grasp on protecting yourself you can then be able to help teach and protect others.

There are multiple styles that teach self-defense, but the basics are the same. Protect your body from injury. Many teachers encourage avoiding confrontation if possible. But if it isn’t, then it is better to have a grasp on how to protect yourself.

When beginning self-defense, it first focuses on the most vulnerable parts of the body. Training is not limited to avoiding permanent damage or death of your opponent. When it comes to fighting for your life there is no restriction to what you can and should do.

The best possible thing for self-defense is practice, especially in a contained area with protective gear and a teacher. Self-defense techniques are not to be taken lightly. Self-defense classes suggest ideas like:

  • counterattacking as soon as possible

  • targeting vulnerable parts of the body such as eyes, neck or throat, solar plexus, face, groin, knee, foot fingers etc.

  • maximum effectiveness and efficiency to neutralize opponent as quickly as possible

  • maintaining awareness of surroundings while dealing with the threat to keep an eye out for escape routes, further attackers, objects that can be used to help defend etc.

Training will also cover situational awareness to be aware of one’s surroundings, learning to understand the psychology of a street confrontation, and identify potential threats before an attack occurs. Also included may be ways to deal with physical and verbal methods to avoid violence whenever it is possible to do so.

The use of the right to self-defense as legal justification for the use of force in times of danger is available in many jurisdictions, but the interpretation varies widely. When it comes to self-defense, it is important to be aware of everything around you including the situation. If the situation is in strict need for it then proceed based upon the classes you have taken. Because of the judicial system, to avoid such harsh consequences, be advised to learn the correct way of determining when and where to use it if necessary.
